CancerChoices, a program of the nonprofit Commonweal, provides independent, science-backed, no cost resources to help people with cancer, caregivers, and healthcare professionals understand choices in integrating conventional care, complementary care, and self care to improve cancer outcomes.

The CancerChoices team synthesizes the research on complementary therapies and provides digital handbooks on a wide range of topics, including eating well, and managing side effects and symptoms. Support to find healing and meaning within the cancer experience is at the heart of CancerChoices.

In 2022, researchers from the National Cancer Institute published a review of websites that evaluate complementary cancer therapies and gave CancerChoices.org (called “Beyond Conventional Cancer Therapies” at that time) their highest rating for quality and trustworthiness.

CancerChoices grew out of co-founder Michael Lerner’s ground-breaking book, Choices in Healing, the first book on integrative cancer care that was lauded by both scientific journals and patients for its compassion and objectivity. The work is also grounded in over 30 years of direct support for people with cancer in the Commonweal Cancer Help Program retreats as well as Commonweal programs Healing Circles Global, Sanctuary, The New School, and Beyond Conventional Cancer Therapies.

CancerChoices is an exceptional resource. There is certainly no shortage of information about integrative cancer care on the internet. The challenge is to find credible, trustworthy, and reliable information. CancerChoices provides just this, and it doesn’t end there. This site provides informed hope and inspires confidence in individuals diagnosed with cancer as well as in their caregivers. Information is power—the power to make informed choices and to be an active participant in your own treatment experience. CancerChoices is at the top of my referral list for web-based information on integrative cancer care—a sparkling gem to illuminate your cancer journey.
